Eagle Rock has a historic connection to the Film “The Nun’s Story”
“The Nun’s Story” is a literary achievement beautifully written in 1956 in Eagle Rock by Kathyrn Hulme about her friend and housemate Marie-Louise Habets. The story was made into a film in 1959, nominated for 6 Academy Awards, and starred the lovely Audrey Hepburn. The story is about a dedicated life and spiritual values, the clash of discipline, and human emotion. Very seldom has such a story been told about a Roman Catholic Sister who served as a hospital nurse in the Belgian Congo just prior to WWII. She eventually gives up her vows and leaves the Sisterhood feeling her call to duty outside the order of the Nun’s. The movie was just released on DVD for the first time. The real fascinating story is how a wanderlust, protestant, American writer meets a Begium ex- nun, nurse in Wildflecken (Wild Place) in the Northeast Bavarian Alps during a mission to help almost 22,000 displaced persons in camps, mainly of Polish background, put their lives together after WWII. In 1951, they sailed from Rotterdam and arrived in the United States. In December of 1952, they bought a house together on a hill overlooking Pasadena and Eagle Rock strangely enough on a street named Wildwood. After they settled in Eagle Rock, Kathryn writes the story of her friend Marie – Louise Habets’ years as a Nun. The book becomes a best seller and an Award Winning, nominated for 6 Academy Awards movie starring Audrey Hepburn. After this book, Kathryn goes on to write 6 more books and Marie-Louise becomes Audrey Hepburn’s personal nurse after Ms. Hepburn suffers a near fatal horse riding accident on the set of the 1960’s film “Unforgiven”. You can now own a piece of history. The home that Kathryn and Marie-Louise once owned is currently for sale. 1430 Wildwood is a view home situated on ½ acre with a pool, deck and 280 degree view.
